There’s always a risk for a home fire, but it increases during the colder months. The U.S. Fire Administration estimates $2 billion in property loss occurs each year from winter house fires. From running a space heater to cleaning out your dryer vent, here are a few risks to look out for as the temperature drops.
1. Be careful with space heaters
We know it’s tempting to cozy up next to a space heater on a snowy night, but they aren’t always your friend. According to the National Fire Protection Association, space heaters cause two of every five house fires. If you have one in your home, make sure it has an automatic shutoff and keep it at least 3 feet away from clothing, furniture or other flammable materials to help avoid the risk of a fire.
2. Check your dryer vent
How often do you clean out your lint filter? According to the U.S. Fire Administration, 2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year, peaking during the winter months. If your clothes are taking twice as long to dry or your dryer feels abnormally hot to the touch, this is a warning sign that a vent might be clogged. Keep an eye on your dryer hose and vent for a buildup of lint or debris and call a professional to assess the situation if something looks off.
3. Follow the rules of fireplace safety
A fireplace is one of the only places you want a fire in your home, but there are still safety measures to keep in mind. The NFPA advises you should store cooled ashes in a tightly covered metal container and keep it outside at least 10 feet away from your home. To help prevent a fire, have a professional inspect your chimney and vents every year.
The thought of a home fire is scary, but taking these precautions can help put your mind at ease. If you're worried, call a professional and have your home inspected so your home will be safe and sound all winter long.
