Gutters
may seem like a luxury item, but there are plenty of benefits for homeowners
with gutters. In fact, the construction industry has recognized how important
gutters are to homes that many municipalities throughout the country have
started to demand them. Of course, gutters must be maintained in order to work
properly. If your home does not have gutters yet – or yours are starting to
fail due to a lack of maintenance, check out these reasons to get new ones.
Protect your foundation
It may sound cliché, but your home is only as
strong as its foundation. If rain water is gushing down around the foundation
of your house, there's a possibility that structural problems will result. If
your foundation erodes, your home may start to tilt or sink. You may develop
cracks in your walls. It's important for your real estate investment to keep
your foundation strong, and gutters can help tremendously.
Soil stays where it should be
Similarly, the soils around the base of your
home need to be preserved. When heavy rains cause small streams of discharge
flowing swiftly through your yard, you'll have erosion problems that are
unsightly and potentially dangerous. However, if that soil is coming from
around your home, it could cause even bigger problems like flooding and
destabilization of your foundation.
Save your exterior and garage doors
Gutters direct rainwater away from the house,
and this includes the doors into your home. Exterior doors, including garage
doors, need to be able to keep the elements outside so storm damage doesn't
occur. If your doors are becoming weathered as a result of rainwater, over time
they'll be more likely to fail when bigger storms arise.
Say farewell to flooding
No one wants to deal with flooding inside their
home. It's messy and can ruin furniture, important papers, clothing and so much
more. Without gutters, flooding under the house and in the basements is
extremely likely as a result of a big storm. Properly installed gutters will
move water at least three feet from your foundation.
Avoid water damage
It can be cozy when a storm strikes and you're
dry inside. But when it's not dry, then you'll have to deal with the results of
water damage. Interior walls can harbor mold and other dangerous impact if
water damage is not treated immediately by storm restoration professionals.
Outside, your walls can become stained as well if gutters can't protect them.
Once your gutters are installed by professionals, you'll need to keep them
maintained to be working well.
