If you haven’t taken a moment to look at how your roof is holding up, now is the time. With the weather warming up, it’s important to make any repairs or replacements as spring storms start rolling in. Not sure exactly what you should be looking for? We’re here to help. From cracking shingles to water leaks, here are a few signs it may be time for a new roof.
1. You spot a leak in your home.
Start from the inside out. Head up to the attic and look for any cracks of light. Where the sun is peeking through, there could be water leaking in. If you see water damage, don’t wait to call a professional. Left untreated, leaks can lead to structural problems, but they can be fixed and avoided if you catch it in time.
2. The roof is sagging.
If your roofline isn’t looking straight or your notice any dips, stay calm. A sagging roof isn’t something you want to see, but it doesn’t mean it’s about collapse. If your roof sags for too long without being repaired or replaced, it can lead to a number of issues, including structural damage.
3. Your shingles are cracked, curling or missing.
Your shingles can tell you a lot about the health of your roof. If you notice they’re missing or cracked, it’s often a clear sign it’s time to replace. Keep an eye out for curling shingles, too. If you spot the edges curling, make sure you get ahead of the issue before it causes more serious problems, like leaks
4. You find the outer layer of your shingles in your gutter.
With warm weather just around the corner, now’s the perfect time for some spring cleaning, starting with your gutters. If you come across pieces of minerals from the outer layer of your shingles, called granules, it could mean your shingles are wearing down and it’s time for an update.
If you spot any of these issues with your roof, call a professional and have your home inspected. Take the time to get ahead of the curve so your small roof issues don’t turn into big ones. You’ll thank yourself later.
